The academic expertise stems from EU projects - our primary area of activity being the distributed systems. Our commercial products, most notably the ISL family of products, are using state-of-the-art network technology.
XLAB can deliver well engineered machine learning, statistics and general AI solutions, based on the needs of the customer and state-of-the-art algorithms, provided by the experts in the field.
We are capable of transforming and developing the novel approaches, customize them in order to fit the problem at hand and the needs of the customer and finally, do so using the engineering principles, that will make the resulting components and programs bulletproof.
The big data management in terms of noSQL solutions is following our core interests and business (distributed systems). Within this segment we thus provide solutions in terms of statistics and management of data. The latter is done using F/OSS tools of choice, whereas the statistics part can be customized to the customer’s needs.
Within the business software focus our biggest asset is eDS – europa 3000 development system (please see www.europa3000.ch), where XLAB is primary developer of the underlying technical platform. The latest among the turnkey solutions, built using this software platform, are the registers for the Mič Styling Salons. The core idea behind the eDS is to have completely modular and powerful set of components, which can be integrated in various business software programs, capable of handling simple cash registers to complex ERP systems.
The 3D reconstruction solely from images is a long-known academic technique, which has been engineered to perfection in XLAB and is branded PHOV. Using this service, you can make a 3D model virtually from anywhere, using a consumer grade camera (even an iPhone will do).
Further expertise in the Computer vision field is localization – we can successfully navigate a robot in inside and outside environments (UAV) – and object recognition.
Cloud computing is part of the XLAB’s core expertise. Involvement in the distributed systems, expertise in networking, server management naturally evolved in expertise in this topic, partly due to in-house development (ISL dept.) and partly due to our involvement in EU projects. Since the beginning, XLAB's primary area of activity have been the distributed systems. Initially focused on grids and cloud computing (connectors to cloud platforms, SLA, PaaS implementations) and their security and dependability, our current research/expertise areas include also peer-to-peer networks, service-oriented architectures, efficiency of distributed applications, resource organization and discovery, multi-agent technologies, scalability management, bio-inspired computing, federated clouds, virtualization technologies and more.
Our GIS based solutions provide a realistic display, integrated with geographic data, open standards based data access, advanced 3D visualization, real-time data integration and spatial analysis tools. Capable of running in mission critical environments, main areas of implementation are: safety, civil protection and rescue as well as spatial planning and analysis.
Urban planners, call centers, administrations and other organizations can benefit from this highly sophisticated information support system that is able to synchronize complex operations, e.g. improve ground – base communication, navigation and coordination with direct display of data in real time.
Following recent technological trends and work on diverse research projects led XLAB to venture in the realm of hardware design. Examples include TeleTransfusion - a tool for remote interpretation of pre-transfusion tests, unmanned air vehicles for airborne 3D reconstruction of larger objects, development of one of the first multi-touch displays in Slovenia and, most recently, our Sentinel product - an internet of things enabled vessel monitoring solution.
Competing on the market, where parity on features and technological capabilities among products is often reached, is more and more focused on creating a relationship with the customer over time, based on how he feels during the whole lifecycle of the product. This led to XLAB’s involvement in the fields of user experience and human-computer interaction (HCI). From a research perspective, XLAB focuses on context-awareness, natural and intelligent interfaces, and usability testing. XLAB is also one of the initiators and main supporters of the Slovenian HCI community (HCI-SI, www.hci.si).
Many of our project and products feature a mobile component or are designed for mobile-first. Our portfolio includes native applications on all major platforms (Android, iOS, Windows Phone) as well as responsive web applications. Within a certain context of use, we always strive to exploit all the possibilities mobile offers in order to ensure maximum usability.
Our interest in mobile spreads beyond the mere technological aspects of mobile development into the business implications of the mobile revolution (demonstrated by XLAB's participation in the MO-BIZZ project).
One of our first commercial products stemmed from our knowledge in networking technologies. It evolved to what is now the ISL family of products, where state-of-the-art cloud and related security mechanisms are used between our world-wide secure network of servers providing mobile collaboration, video-conferencing systems on hand-held mobile devices in real time. The nature of the products also requests expertise in firewall penetration technology. Other fields of expertise, e.g. IoT, are also closely connected with network technologies.
XLAB has long been involved in the fields of dependability, cybersecurity, privacy and trust through commercial applications, European Projects and active participation in relevant initiatives (e.g. NESSI). References include the implementation of secure data sharing in Odyssey, identity management and federation security services (and a software-defined network) within Contrail, detecting malicious activities on mobile devices within operator's and enterprise networks on ACDC, Service Level Agreements (SLAs) for security on SPECS, state-of-the-art firewall penetration (within legal boundaries) dependable communication and transport layers in our ISL-Online products and more.
Complex numerical simulations are for XLAB both, a good use case for research in distributed systems, and a research interest per se. Flood simulations, crisis management and solar cells' properties are just a few domains in which XLAB applied its knowledge.
XLAB is also active in bringing high performance computing (HPC) 'to the masses'; projects like FORTISSIMO or the national research project xHPA aim at lowering the entry barriers, in terms of capital, human and knowledge resources, that SMEs face when approaching HPC.
XLAB offers the service of designing your software, tailored to your needs and leading the implementation teams, using either classic PRINCE2 management strategy or newer, agile management strategies.
Large-scale enterprise systems today can comprise complete data centers with thousands of servers. These systems are heterogeneous and have many interdependencies that makes their administration very complex. The basis for the management of a cloud infrastructure is the provision of information about the system state at all points in time - a task entrusted to XLAB on several projects: from monitoring jobs in XtreemOS to service level agreement monitoring in SLA@SOI.

We will quickly transform them into a working solution, using our proven in-house development techniques and processes, which will even guide you in selecting the most appropriate approaches towards solution of your problem. Our flagship products are Gaea+ and MedicView. Gaea+ is a 3D GIS with detailed geospatial data (buildings, streets, landscape, etc.) used in a number of customer-tailored solutions like visualization of floods simulations to inform people about critical areas and help with emergency responses. MedicView is a family of custom 3D dental and radiology solutions with state of the art image visualization and analysis.
Visualization also highlights the interdisciplinary nature of XLAB as knowledge from other fields is often the base for innovative visualization solutions like complex analytical dashboards for monitoring, 8memo's intelligent algorithms for organization of photo collections or adapted data structures for fast visualization of massive LiDAR datasets.
